John Safran vs God

Did anyone see last night's (6/9/05) episode of John Safran vs God? Are you also feeling weirded out?

I have been faithfully watching this series, enjoying the irony, a weekly dose of mockery and religious experiementation, the quirks, the humour, the strange facts.

And then last night. An irony-free zone. A whole episode devoted to Safran's exorcism from the demons of all the previous episodes, by a guy with a special devotion to Margaret Thatcher.

Gone were the usual opening and closing credits, with their 'hate priest' soundtrack. Gone the cynical reflection and comment.

Are we to take from this that the experience was, in fact, real and powerful, despite being accompanied by all the usual nonsense ('horoscopes open you to demons, meditation opens you to demons, I renounce the spirit of lust etc.')? Safran certainly looked as though something frightening and real was happening to him, and was willing to show an episode where he suffered significant loss of dignity, without his usual sardonic distancing.

Or is it all a big hoax...is he going to pop up next week to say ha ha, fooled you that time?

I don't know how to fit all this into my current religious categories. Any ideas?

hi brenda. i watched and

hi brenda. i watched and felt unsettled by it as well. there was no recap/summary so i looked on the net and found an excerpt of a radio interview he did about that episode. he didn't make any conclusive statement either way about it other than "i don't remember much about what happened." plenty of inquires by people asking the same questions but not much in the way of answers - safran didn't seem to be denying something significant occured. i'll be interested to know if you find anything more helpful.
