8 Mt Eden Rd has had three iterations over its history.

Starting initially as a Sunday School at a house in Exmouth St, growing numbers soon dictated requirements for larger premises. This led to a 9m by 6m hall being built opposite the then Public Library (now Galbraiths). By 1880, the Sunday School had moved again to the current church site and it was in 1885 that Mt Eden Baptist Church was formally recognised. Mt Eden Baptist would cease its operation in 1960. In 1935 a Jubilee Souvenir was produced detailing some of the history up until that point in time.

As the Baptist City Mission

This week’s Regen bit of history comes in the form of a poem read by Matt Gumbrell. It was written about the City Mission toward the end of almost 10 years of service by Murray Beck who was the Missioner. It’s a different part of the history of ‘this place’.
